Starbucks Petites

If food had the capacity to express human emotion, well then, this is definitively emoting our feelings about this work week.

Bleh.

Typical Starbucks baked goods level of deliciousness-- a bit on the oily side, but we can't complain since it's just so darn convenient. And cute!

Paris Baguette

French? Parisian? Er...Korean? We won't bore you with the reason for why we so desperately craved 빵, but after passing by this place whilst returning from a work adventure and then again when returning from ComiCon, we can definitively say, "The craving has been allayed." With A's ravings about their red bean-filled doughnuts in mind, we got a few of those (uh, of course!), while also picking up a red bean bun (hits the spot!), chocolate bread (Wow, chocolatey!), mocha bread (which doesn't taste of mocha, nor bread), and sweet potato cake (It's so surprisingly delicious, we could die!).

These days, we're not sure if it's the eating lunch at our desks or the daily overtime at work that makes us feel pooped to the core, but a sure-fire pick-me-up is some good ole fresh
빵. As A would say, =9

KoFoo

This cute little spot was bustling with customers. Why? As of yet, I have no idea. For Bibimbap it really is worth the long trip up and over to K-Town (and the stone pot) instead. Maybe the Kimpap is good? You're probably better off trying dishes that don't require special pots for cooking. I don't know, but I am willing to take one for the team and try those out too.

NOTE: Don't let the new cashier charge you twice!

Cuba Cafe

A search for some Japanese place quickly jotted down days ago led me to be lost and way out of my lunching range. So, on my way back to the office, I spotted this Cuban place (I searched for a Cuban place a couple of weeks prior only to find it closed down and is currently a construction site-- way to be on top of things, me) and hopped right in to purchase an over-the-budget-before-I-even-had-a-budget meal of Pulled beef with tomatoes and fluorescent rice. By the time I got back to the office, everything was bright orange, but what can I say? Pulled meat? I save a special place in my heart for you.

Veniero's (with Pictures)

We've posted about Veniero's before, but this time, we provide pictures. And, a different point of view. Strangely enough, not too different. This is similarly the third stop of the night, but we decided to take out all the stops and put our metaphoric dessert car in full gear. Between KM, P, & I, we tried the Tortoni, Italian Cheesecake, and Chocolate Banana Strawberry Cake. The menu is so extensive (if a little ghetto), it's hard to pick out just one (or three). But, of course, we're not complaining! I'll be honest, it's not the most amazing Italian dessert I've had in NYC, but the place has got something for everyone. On every occasion.

When I said we pulled out all the stops, I meant it. We got some Rainbow Cookies for take-away too! Again, not the best we've had. The cake layers were a smidgen dry for our trained Rainbow Cake palates.

Panera

Hankering for a fresh, tasty Lobster Roll/Sandwich? No time to drive up to Maine? Hate road trips? Or just plain old don't have a car? Luckily, now you can pick one up at your local Panera (Hurrah!)-- Limited Time Only! (Oh, no!)

But beware, convenience comes with a price. An arm? A leg? No, $16.99!!! (Thanks, A, for pickin' up the tab!)

Five Guys

We were coming back from the city for a really belated lunch, and what could be more convenient and appetizing than the new Five Guys that just opened up near us?!

We drooled over all the dine-ins' meals as we waited on line to place our order. With mostly meat on the menu, I wasn't sure what to eat - a veggie sandwich (your pick of veggies on bread) just didn't sound so appealing in this burger joint. I made a quick decision to try something new and this is what we brought home to feast on:

KS: Cheeseburger (lettuce, pickles, tomato, mushrooms, onions, & BBQ sauce)
A: Cheeseburger (lettuce, mushrooms, onions, & BBQ sauce)
K: Little Cheeseburger (lettuce, mushrooms, & BBQ sauce)
E: Kosher Dog (ketchup & mustard)
(yes, that says I had a hotdog. no, it wasn't a chicken, turkey, or tofu one.)

Plus plenty of Five Guys Fries & Cajun Fries to share :) The cheeseburgers (in all shapes & sizes) earned two thumbs up, and that was arguably the best hotdog I've ever eaten (why doesn't anyone else cut up their hotdogs like they do?!) Brilliant!

Don't forget the free peanuts! :P

Macarons GRATUITEMENT, Le Deuxième

Left to Right: Espresso, Black Sesame, & Coconut

Free macaron, take II. Fail. With our Macaron Day determination sagging, we entered Macaron with three flavors in mind, only to be swayed by the other flavors behind the glass counter.

Though there were no more free macarons, they did offer small samples. We were able to try (and compare) the caramel. Though we very much enjoyed the chewiness of the cookie (which we may even prefer to here) the flavor of the caramel was decidedly lacking (which we definitively prefer here). Macaron, similar to here, does offer those queer (Asian-inspired?) flavors that we very much enjoy (though the French would probably scoff at them).

Macarons GRATUITEMENT, Le Premier

From the top, clockwise: Caramel. Hazelnut. Chocolate.

This was OTHERWORLDLY.

Though it was Macaron Day and we were supposed to get these for free, they ran out of their "free" macarons. This just goes to show that "Otherworldly" doesn't come cheap. If you're a chocolate fiend, be prepared that La Maison is not only filled to the rim with beautiful chocolates whispering sweet, tasty nothings, but it also smells like it. Killer.

des macarons français. français?

When the Lunar New Year lies on Valentine's Day, one has the opportunity to choose from a remarkably larger pool of reasons to convince oneself and family to purchase sweets while in NY. However, we are who we are, and we need no convincing.

Having passed this wee shop at least 15 times in the span of two days, hearing the loud cries from the brightly colored confections, we finally found a chance to squish enter into the shop. After some confusion about the name of the store (the outdoor signage boasts "Organic Ice Cream", yet the name on the box suggests a different title) and pricing (we combine our left brain power to take on simple mathematics, but it's infinitely harder to complete a transaction when the cashier can't do the same), we finally settled on a sampler box of macarons. Sorry! With all the previous confusion, we couldn't even remember the 13 flavors ordered even as we stepped out the door.

Some of the flavors were Litchi Rose, Lavender Chocolate, Lemon, Pistachio, Guava, and Espresso. A lot of the flavors tasted true to name, but there were some we couldn't quite pinpoint, and then there was the Espresso, which tasted nothing like it. If you're in the neighborhood and feelin' for a macaron, definitely check this place out for it's unique flavors. But, you should know-- It's not otherworldly.

STOP for Cupcakes

After some belated birthday present shopping, we almost missed the cupcakestop.com truck parked right in front of our eyes - but luckily the brain did a quick compute and we backtracked to order half a dozen of these newfound cupcakes. To get back in time for (a really late) lunch, we swiftly decided on two each of the red velvet, vanilla vanilla, and black forest. It must've been a V-day special since they were all decorated in PINK (E disapproves).
In the spirit of the holidays, we split them up and shared with the rest of the (starving) fam. The red velvet cake was a little on the dry side, but the black forest and vanilla cakes were more moist to our liking. They were good, but...I think I'm more fond of their mascot than their cakes XP. Nevertheless - would love to try some of the other flavors they have listed on their online menu!

Village Tart

Having heard various things about this new dig in Nolita, we purchased some nibbles to try back home. When asked, "What's recommended?", the girl behind the counter pointed to the tart pictured above. Though it looks like tomato sauce on a thick crust, dusted with slivered almonds, it's in actuality a grapefruit tart and quite delicious. The crust is thick, hovering between a cake and tart crust, and the grapefruit is just a bit on the tarty side.

To the left is their version of the Alfajores and mini Olive Oil Madeleines. We don't know what the seemingly current Olive Oil craze is, but while one of us is OK with the craze, the other is not so crazy. The Alfajores is made up of two buttery, caramel cookies sandwiching caramel. It's completely different from those KM brought back from Argentina. Not knowing what's authentic, it was completely enjoyable nonetheless. C'mon! Where can you go wrong with flakey cookies and caramel?

This place also serves meals and many other desserts. It's overwhelming, but we're sure after the first visit, you'll have your tasting system down pat.

Rainbow Cookie maker

Ferrara has dressed up for V-day!

It's not very often I get to visit Ferrara, and that's quite unfortunate since they make my FAVORITE RAINBOW COOKIE of all time. I've tried many brands, and though several of them are good in their own sense, no one comes close to making them in that perfect proportion that Ferrara seems to have mastered.

It was C's birthday night, and I hadn't had any dinner (unless you count those 2 curly fries!). Luckily, I caught a ride home with KS, and it just so happened that Ferrara was on the way - not to mention we got an open parking spot right in front (obviously I wasn't the one driving T_T). I walked outta there with a pound of rainbow cookies and some mini-pastries (eclairs, mousse cakes, cannoli) to top it off. My midnight snack (aka dinner) was heavenly.

Kyotofu (lunch trial)

Whooooo! Drunk at work off lunch!

J/K. But that sake-infused mac & cheese (pictured with I's 'Pigs in a Duvet") sure packs some punch! Though it'll take a bit lot more to render me drunken, my mouth IS definitely NUMB. This might have a little to do with my having scarfed down the whole dish in two minutes, or maybe it was their potent sake, or maybe it was a combo of both. I am now way too full to even touch the warm sweet potato cake I was so looking forward to :(

Cookie Monster

Having constantly heard about how great these Hampton Chutney cookies are, we finally bagged some. They aren't mind-numbingly spectacular, but they can definitely appease the Cookie Monster in you. Plus, they keep pretty fresh for days-- if you can keep your fluffy, blue hands off for that long...

Butter Lane

See that vanilla buttercream-frosted, banana bread cupcake on top? Classic yumminess with a slight twist - ingenious! See that shine in the top right corner? Yeeeeah, that's honey glistening on top of the creamy BIG RED (aka cinnamon, for those of you who aren't familiar - you should be ashamed of yourselves!) frosting cupcake. See that stuff on the bottom right that looks like popcorn on top of a burnt caramel-frosted, chocolate cupcake? That's exactly what it is (what a notion!?). And see those mini-marshmallows on the left atop a peanut butter cream, banana bread cupcake? That right there is the most delicious thing ever.

For this post, we must thank L (THANK YOU L!) for donating a dozen cupcakes C's way, who in turn donated these 4 yummy cupcakes our way (THANK YOU C!). And we must thank C again (THANK YOU C!) for allowing us to enjoy these cakes in the comfort of our own home, on our most comfy couch. Everyone else will have to enjoy their's here:

Cafe 360

There are two things at Cafe 360 that we had to try. OK, more than two things. But we held back! We know. It's hard. It's shocking. It's unbelievable. BUT. WE. DID. IT.

Of course it helped that we entered the bakery with our minds focused on gelato [insert angelic song here]. Not hindered by the freezing temperature outside (yeah! hardcore!), KM ordered scoops of hazelnut, dark chocolate, and dulce de leche. I got amaretto and tiramisu. It was definitely hard pickings, but we resolved to come back at a later [warmer] date to try the other flavors. Dining next to the Hookah paraphernalia and utilizing our Shifu-trained gelato taste buds, we concurred that though it's not the best we've had, it's way more convenient than stopping by-- O' say Italy-- on the way back from the mall. We'd go back, but we definitely prefer other shindigs in NY, NY, and NJ.

Oh yeah, and then there's the rainbow marzipan. Meh. While it's amazingly five layered, the layers actually work against it. The cake is too thick and therefore heavily sugar-soaked, the jam is too prominent, and the chocolate is completely lacking (literally-- where's the chocolate?). Ooooh picky picky.

These are some of our favorite desserts, so we always look for recommendations. So, RECOMMENDATIONS???

Crumbs

Thanks to our cousin, KS, we were once again able to nibble (or inhale, whichever) the delicious cupcake flavors of CRUMBS. A lot of cupcake bakeries claim amazing cupcakes, but we often find that their frosting may taste great, while the cake is dry and crumbly. A good frosting is never the answer to a dry cake. That is our mantra. Or, it would be if we had one. You've probably already tried these, so I'll make it short(er). The cake was moist and dense (as a cupcake should be), and though the frosting is a bit thick for our tastes, it was pretty satisfying frosting. We don't like the crunch of the chocolate chips (for those that came with them), but we love the ganache surprise. It screams, "Surprise!". And, we're OK with that.

Flavors shown: Vanilla Coconut, White Hot Chocolate, Peppermint, Pistachio,
Red Velvet, Cappuccino, Brownie, & Blackout.
